Aviation is a unique industry that has few parallels in other fields. The first experience many pilots have in the industry is undergoing primary flight training. Beginning flight school is not simply starting a new training program or even a new career, it is leaping into what may feel like an entirely different world. This can be a bit scary and overwhelming for many people. However, with time and practice it will eventually become second nature as flying and a career in this field will become normalized.

This journey starts for most on their first day of flight school. In this article, we will explain what Axiom students can expect from the day they sign up through their first few weeks of training.

How to get started at Axiom Aviation

Take a Tour

Those looking to start flight training at Axiom Aviation will typically begin their journey by doing a tour with one of the Flight Instructors (CFIs) who handles tours and school inquiries. On the tour, the CFI will break down the program. This breakdown will include the length of the course along with the cost. This is done after the student receives a comprehensive tour of the school's facilities and aircraft. The tours will be adjusted according to the student's flight experience and flying goals. During the tour, the prospective students can ask questions to help them better understand the program and what will be required to succeed in flight school.

Most tours are in person, however, for those who live out of state, virtual tours may be arranged. At the end of the tour, the CFI will give a student the necessary information to help them obtain their First Class Medical Certificate. They will also give information about paying for flight training, including, a thorough breakdown of pay-as-you-go procedures and available financing options.

Schedule Your Start Date

Once a student has done a tour and has decided to start flight training they will need to schedule a start date. They will do so with the CFI they did a tour with. Before the student gets signed up, they must obtain their medical certificate and secure financing. Students looking to pay out of pocket need to pay their first bill before starting.

The first day of flight school will be focused on the signup process. This process typically takes about one hour. Once the student is signed up they will be paired with a CFI. The student will be with this instructor for the majority of their time at Axiom Aviation.

The First Few Weeks

Students will begin working on ground and flight training during their first week of flight school. These first few lessons will focus on basic airplane handling. Full-time students can expect to fly five times per week and part-time students can expect to fly as many times per week as they choose. In addition to starting basic flight lessons, students will coordinate their schedules with their CFI to build a schedule that works well for both parties.

After a few weeks of flight training, most students will be well acquainted with their aircraft and will have completed most of the initial ground training. Students will typically do their first solo around this point. From this point onwards students will have a fairly consistent flight schedule and will have built a firm foundation of ground and flight knowledge that they will lean on for the rest of their career.

Bonus Step: Discovery Flight

While not entirely necessary, it is encouraged that prospective students take a discovery flight (sometimes called an intro flight) before they begin flight training. Discovery flights here at Axiom last about 1 hour and are the cost of one flight hour. On the flight, the CFI will handle take-off and landing. The students may fly as much of the cruise portion of the flight as they want.

Discovery flights are a great way for students to learn if flying is enjoyable. It also helps them get a feel for how a particular school operates.
